It was originally founded as a company town for the nearby Falconbridge (now Glencore) Sudbury Integrated Nickel Operations. The community is in close proximity to prime waterfront real estate in Skead and Wahnapitae on Lake Wanapitei, the largest lake in the world contained within a single city.
